SAVANNAH, GA – December 30, 2019 – Savannah Philharmonic Chorus is holding auditions from 6-8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at Skidaway Island Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah.
The Chorus periodically performs with the orchestra, which is under the direction of Maestro Keitaro Harada, and puts on choral-only concerts each year. Performance venues include the Lucas and Johnny Mercer theatres, as well as other special locales. Those who sing in the chorus learn great choral masterworks and new commissions and enjoy other volunteer opportunities, such as the chance to serve as a Philharmonic Ambassador. The chorus is a diverse and welcoming vocal community, where members can meet other enthusiastic singers and develop their own voices.
Savannah Philharmonic Chorus rehearsals are every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Savannah Arts Academy, 500 Washington Ave., Savannah. Anyone who enjoys singing is invited to the auditions.
“Our members hold various day jobs, such as teachers, doctors, nurses, artists, sales representatives, homemakers, students and retirees. They come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and live in nearly every community represented in Coastal Empire – downtown Savannah, the islands, Richmond Hill, Pooler, The Landings and more. A wide range of experience levels exist within the chorus, and with designated section leaders and vocal coaching available, the Philharmonic Chorus is a great place for a singer to learn and thrive,” said Chorus Master Mel Whitehead.
The Jan. 6 audition is a chance for the chorus director to hear each singer’s voice and assess the singer’s fit into the chorus. It will consist of singing a major scale and a phrase from a well-known tune (e.g. “My Country Tis of Thee” or “The Star-Spangled Banner”), a cappella. A short rhythm and sight-singing exercise will follow, closing with a couple of music theory questions. All auditionees must fill out an application form, which can be downloaded at www.savannahphilharmonic.org.
