SAVANNAH PHILHARMONIC AND SCCPSS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR SECOND ANNUAL “LINK UP YOUNG PERSON’S CONCERT”

SAVANNAH, GA – January 29, 2020 – In its second year of collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, Savannah Philharmonic will present “Link Up: The Orchestra Rocks!” These Young Person’s Concerts will take place at 10 a.m. and noon Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Johnny Mercer Theater, 301 W Oglethorpe Ave.

Each February, Savannah Philharmonic offers two Young Person’s concerts for area students in collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. The Link Up Young Person’s Concerts are presented after students study a three-month curriculum provided by Carnegie Hall in their music classes. This curriculum includes learning the recorder flute, singing an array of melodies and songs, composing musical works, and learning music history and biographical information about various composers.

After the curriculum is fulfilled, students get to join the Savannah Philharmonic for their “debut” performances, playing their recorder flutes alongside Savannah Philharmonic musicians. This program showed successes for both students and teachers, as they were able to take music education to the next level, and display in-concert all their hard work for their friends, family, and the Savannah community to see.

Approximately 2,800 Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) students are currently studying the Link Up curriculum, and 1,500 students are expected to attend the concert on Feb. 5.

SCCPSS Performing Arts Specialist and Savannah Philharmonic Chorusmaster Mel Whitehead is happy to see the collaborative effort expanding, yielding very favorable results for the students of Savannah.

“Having professional musicians come into the classrooms to work with our students is an invaluable gift to SCCPSS from Savannah Philharmonic,” Whitehead said. “By providing collaborative programs such as Carnegie Hall’s Link Up Young Person’s Concert, our students are given the remarkable opportunity of performing with the highest caliber of musicians and will truly have the experience of a lifetime!”
