SAVANNAH, GA – September 18, 2019 – The Savannah Ballet Theatre (SBT) is slated to celebrate the spookiest time of year with its world premiere of Jack the Ripperat 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 at Savannah Cultural Arts Center, 201 Montgomery Street. This brand-new contemporary production was created by SBT and demonstrates how the traditional art form of ballet has evolved for today’s audiences.

Most people are familiar with the story of the British Victorian era murderer, Jack the Ripper, but not those of his victims. Savannah Ballet Theatre’s professional dancers will take the audience on a journey through the lives of the five women known to have been killed by this criminal. These victims, often referred to as ‘The Canonical Five’, were murdered over a three-month period between August and November 1888. This new production focuses on the tale of the unsolved case of Jack the Ripper; his identity was never discovered and he was never brought to justice. Uniquely, the ballet tells the story from the perspective of his female victims.

“This will be a great opportunity for audiences to not only experience our new production but also our community’s new venue, the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, as our premiere of Jack the Ripperwill be the first ballet performed in this space,” said SBT Advancement Director Abby McCuen.

Although SBT is known for its superior production of The Nutcrackerevery December, the company is also known throughout the Southeast for their innovative, original adaptations of popular stories and movies, such of Wizard of Ozearlier this year. Jack the Ripperis just another example of how SBT pushes these boundaries by curating their own ballets about a wide range of different stories along with their staged classical productions.

This performance is suggested for children 13 and older. While the ballet will not be gory, it does feature adult content. Tickets are reserved seating and each cost $25. To purchase tickets, please visit

SBT is Savannah and southeast Georgia’s only professional dance company. It is their mission to develop and showcase the talent of dedicated Savannah dancers alongside top professional dancers who train in the studio, and to engage in educational outreach and promotion of the art of dance within the community.
