SAVANNAH, GA – October 1, 2020 – Following its temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Savannah African Art Museum (SAAM) plans to reopen with limited hours for in-person tours on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Tours will be offered Wednesday through Saturday from 1-5 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m., at the museum, 201 E 37th Street. For people who prefer to enjoy tours from the comfort of their home, daily virtual tours will continue at 12 p.m. (noon) Monday through Friday on the museum’s Facebook, and workshops will continue online until further notice.
Masks are required for all visitors and staff. For those without a face covering, the museum will provide a kit, for a $1 charge, which includes a mask and one glove to be used on stairway handrails. Signage is placed throughout the museum to direct the flow of traffic and encourage social distancing. Sanitizer stations are also located throughout the building for guests and staff. Tour sizes will be limited to five people per group and all public areas will be sanitized between each tour group.
“We are very excited to once again be able to share our collection in-person with the Savannah community and beyond,” said SAAM Founding Executive Director and Chief Curator Billie Stultz. “All staff and visitors will strictly adhere to precautions we’ve put in place to ensure everyone’s health and safety as they enjoy the museum’s galleries.”
Savannah African Art museum is a non-profit institution devoted to spreading awareness and appreciation of African culture. They hold a collection of over 1,000 objects that hail from West and Central Africa. The museum’s collection spans over 28 countries and represents over 180 cultures.
