SAVANNAH, GA – MARCH 20, 2020 – Today, the Salvation Army of Savannah is expanding its emergency shelter facilities by preparing overnight accommodation at its Bee Road location in addition to its existing Montgomery Street shelter. This action has been taken to meet the significant increase in demand as other shelters are closing in our area and to improve levels of social distancing between residents in line with US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance.

The Salvation Army of Savannah is also launching a new appeal for donations and is asking people to support those in need by calling 912-200-3004 or to donate online at https://salvationarmygeorgia.org/savannah.

“The Salvation Army currently has nine children sheltering with us in Savannah and we are supporting them with online learning in addition to providing them and their families with emergency shelter and meals,” said The Salvation Army of Savannah’s Major Paul Egan. “There has already been a big increase in requests for food, clothing, rent and utilities assistance, as this COVID-19 (coronavirus) crisis intensifies and opening a second overnight facility is becoming necessary”.

To date, no employee, volunteer or individual utilizing services at The Salvation Army facilities has tested positive for COVID-19. The organization has been undertaking additional deep cleaning and complying with CDC guidance. The non-profit organization will continue to follow the guidance and recommendations of public health officials.
