Dr. Edwin Johnson Talks About His Passion
Immediately after saying our hellos and taking our seats at Coffee Deli, Ardsley Park resident Edwin Johnson began his self-proclaimed “shame-less promotion” for the Savannah African Art Museum (SAAM), where he serves as volunteer coordinator, docent trainer and collections manager. My husband and I have had the pleasure of touring the museum, which officially opened its doors at its spacious new location on February 1, 2019, located at 201 E. 37th St. on Ardsley Park’s doorstep, so I was excited for the chance to learn more about the inspiring artifacts we’d seen.
If you’re not yet familiar with the Savannah African Art Museum, it houses Savannah’s only collection of over 1,000 objects of traditional art from the continent of Africa, including a wide range of ceremonial and spiritual pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. SAAM’s mission is one of education coupled with the desire to start conversations about the power, diversity and spirituality of African art.
