Ardsley Living Meet Your Neighbors

Ruthie Duran Deffley is the Children and Family Ministries’ Director at Asbury Memorial, where she helped to launch the innovative program called Godly Play. The long and winding road that led Ruthie to the position at Asbury Memorial is nothing less than extraordinary–and I believe you’ll see, as I did, why it fits her to a T! Ruthie and her younger sister grew up in Mexico City with a Mexican mother and an American father. The girls were raised in a bi-lingual household and attended an American school. In high school, Ruthie volunteered at a local orphanage and taught Sunday School at her church. After graduation, she left Mexico City to attend the Walsh School of Foreign Services at
Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where she also worked with AmeriCorps for a year. “After witnessing the tremendous disparity in one of DC’s most impoverished neighborhoods, I knew foreign service was not the right work for me,” she said. “There was so much work that needed to be done right here!”
